Odisha is on the cusp of a major urban leap with the launch of the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project. Aimed at easing traffic congestion, boosting connectivity, and promoting sustainable mobility, the metro promises to redefine how Bhubaneswar and Cuttack move.

Phase 1 - Overview

  • Route:πŸš‡ Biju Patnaik Airport (Bhubaneswar) β†’πŸš‡ Trisulia (Cuttack)
  • Length: ~26 km
  • Stations: 20
  • Design: Elevated (with potential underground stretches in high-traffic areas)
  • Timeline: Construction started in Nov 2023, targeted for completion by Dec 2027
  • Estimated Cost: β‚Ή6,255 crore (fully state-funded)

The project is spearheaded by the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL), with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) acting as the technical consultant.

As Bhubaneswar grows as a Smart City and Cuttack remains a critical medical and trade hub, seamless transit between them is essential. The metro aims to:

  • Reduce road congestion by 25–30%
  • Cut travel time by up to 50%
  • Promote eco-friendly transport options

The state government is also integrating the metro with buses, e-rickshaws, and feeder services for smooth last-mile connectivity.
